Ilesa, Osun State – March 2, 2025
The management of the University of Ilesa (UNILESA) has announced a two-week break for students, effective immediately, as part of efforts to address recent security concerns affecting off-campus student residences.
The decision, taken after approval of the Senate by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Olufemi Asaolu, is aimed at easing tensions and allowing security agencies to stabilize the situation.
The Vice Chancellor confirmed that the university promptly took action following reports of a security breach involving off-campus students.
At approximately 3:00 a.m., the University Registrar alerted the Police Area Commander, who swiftly mobilized three Divisional Police Officers alongside armed personnel to secure the affected areas.
In addition, military personnel assigned to the university responded to the situation. These coordinated efforts led to the arrest and detention of one of the suspected assailants.
In a demonstration of the institution’s commitment to student welfare, the Vice Chancellor and university management visited injured students at the hospital, ensuring they received adequate medical attention.
Further steps are being taken to prevent a recurrence, including a high-level stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Monday. This meeting, convened by the Police Area Commander, will involve university management, security agencies, landlords, caretakers, and student representatives to develop comprehensive security measures.
In an official memorandum issued by the Registrar, ‘Funso Ojo, students were advised to utilize the break for academic preparation ahead of the 2024/2025 first-semester examinations. The examinations are scheduled to commence immediately after the break, on Monday, March 17, 2025.
The university reiterates its unwavering commitment to student safety and assures the university community that all necessary steps are being taken to enhance security. Students are urged to stay informed through official communication channels.
Signed
Funso OJO
